VELscope Oral Cancer Screening in Port Moody

Suter Brook Dental Group uses the VELscope VX Enhanced Oral Assessment System for oral cancer screening. This tool is widely used across the globe to detect abnormal tissue in the oral cavity that can indicate the presence of cancer.

Early detection of oral cancer can save lives. There are typically more positive outcomes for patients who receive treatment in the early stages of the disease. Our screening processes help our patients secure their health.

More About the VELscope Tool

The VELscope is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that can aid in the detection of oral cancer. The bright blue light from the tool is shone into the mouth and illuminates the intraoral tissue. Healthy tissues will absorb the light, while unhealthy areas such as lesions or cancerous/pre-cancerous cells will be highlighted. The results of the VELscope tool and other screening techniques need to be interpreted by an experienced dentist.

This tool is used in our typical oral cancer screening process alongside other techniques, including visual and manual inspections of the tissue in and around the mouth, head, and neck.

These tests are used for screening purposes only, which means they are not conclusive. If our dental team has concerns after the screening process, we will refer you for further medical testing to confirm whether cancer is present. Survival rates for oral cancer are relatively high when caught early.

Oral Cancer Prevention

Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to serious diseases such as oral cancer. Making lifestyle changes and being aware of the risk factors are important preventative steps anyone can take.

Most people know that quitting tobacco use is one of the most important lifestyle changes you can make. However, it is not as commonly known that tobacco use with frequent, heavy drinking can drastically increase the risk of oral cancer.

Other risk factors for oral cancer include:

  • A compromised immune system
  • Frequent, excessive sun exposure
  • A history of other kinds of cancer
  • Poor oral hygiene and oral health care
  • Contraction of human papillomavirus (HPV16)
